Today is National Public Garden’s Day so it is only fitting that my Friday Favorites this week is on public gardens. These are some of my favorite photos I’ve taken at public gardens as well as my favorite links to help you become more involved with public gardens.
The first step is to visit a public garden! To find a public garden near you visit the American Public Garden Association’s garden search page.
The second step is to become a member of a public garden. My family belongs to the Cleveland Botanical Garden and with that membership we enjoy free admission all year to the garden, discounts at local nurseries and garden centers, discounts on classes at the garden, and free or reduced admission at hundreds of other gardens in the US through the American Horticultural Society’s Reciprocal Admissions Program. Three of my favorite gardens that we have visited through this program are: Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis, MO, Blithewold Gardens in Narragansett RI, and Como Park Zoo and Marjorie McNeely Conservatory in St. Paul, MN.
Just like the Radiated Tortoise, public gardens are an endangered resource due to lack of funding. You can help just by becoming a member and enjoying your local public garden 1-2 times a year and that is a win-win situation. If you don’t believe me ask Luke!
